There is an urgent need for innovative therapies to treat psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Immunotherapy has proved effective in many medical fields, but there are virtually no antibody-based therapies for brain diseases, mainly due to their poor penetration into the brain. Our recent work has shown that camelid mini-antibodies (nanobodies) hold great promise for the treatment of brain diseases. We have recently established proof of concept that these nanobodies, by targeting the presynaptic mGlu2 receptor, can restore the symptoms of schizophrenia in several preclinical models.
